Microsoft has now discontinued its Skype service after more than 20 years. For those who previously used Skype, this means your chat history, contact list, and call history are now available in the free Teams Free service. If you had Skype credit or a subscription, these have also been transferred. Teams Free thus gathers everything you need for communication, but with more tools and modern features.
Teams Free – What’s New?
Teams Free is designed to be a convenient and cost-free option for both everyday communication and simple collaboration. You can start meetings directly via the web without downloading anything, create meeting links, and use the "Meet Now" function for video calls in chats. Chat works both one-on-one and in groups, and file and image sharing happens directly in the conversation. For those who want to organize multiple projects or groups, it’s possible to create shared spaces. Custom notifications, video filters, and security settings allow you to control your experience.
Impact on SharePoint and Teams Users
For those already using Microsoft Teams or SharePoint, the change primarily affects how internal and external calls are handled. Integrations with SharePoint remain unchanged, but Teams Free can be an alternative for smaller groups, associations, or external parties who do not have access to full enterprise licenses. However, it’s important to note that Teams Free does not offer the same advanced collaboration features or security as Teams in Microsoft 365.
User Experiences
Several users report that the transition from Skype to Teams Free has been easy and that the interface feels familiar. For education, associations, and small projects, Teams Free is a cost-free alternative with basic chat and meeting features.
