In May, Microsoft introduced several new features and improvements in Teams, with a particular focus on collaboration and user experience. Here, we summarize the most relevant updates for those working with Teams and SharePoint.
Enhanced Collaboration in Teams
Microsoft has further developed Teams with an updated chat and channel experience. It is now easier to quickly get an overview of the most important information and to organize conversations and content according to your own needs. You can filter messages, create custom sections, and structure conversations in a way that fits your workflow. For developers, there are expanded opportunities to build tailored AI agents for Teams, including new protocols that enable different agents to collaborate and exchange information directly with each other—without needing to go through central systems.
AI Agents and Smarter Meetings
A major new feature is the introduction of interactive AI agents that can be invited to both chats and meetings. These agents can assist with everything from answering questions to following up on action items directly during a meeting. Teams has also introduced support for so-called agentic memory, allowing AI agents to remember previous interactions and thus provide more relevant and personalized responses. This can be especially useful for organizations working with longer processes or complex cases in Teams.
New Capabilities in the Meeting Experience
For those who frequently participate in meetings, there are now improved options for accessibility and control. For example, you can use real-time text (RTT) during meetings, which provides support for instant text communication. Additionally, organizers can more easily control exactly what participants see during larger meetings and webinars, providing a more professional impression and reducing the risk of sharing the wrong content by mistake.
Improvements in Teams Rooms and Peripheral Equipment
For hybrid meetings and working from different locations, Microsoft has continued to develop Teams Rooms. Among other things, it is now easier to automatically use both audio and video in BYOD rooms, and there is now support for more types of hardware directly in the Teams app. IT administrators also gain better control through new role-based permissions for device management.
Security and Privacy
Another new feature is that Teams can now warn users if sensitive information is being shared on screen during a meeting. This provides an extra layer of security, especially during external presentations or meetings where confidential data might inadvertently be displayed.
