What’s new and why it matters
Microsoft is rolling out an updated experience for document libraries in SharePoint. The focus is on simpler navigation, clearer views, and faster work directly in the library. For organizations that manage many files and metadata, this can reduce clicks and increase accuracy in daily work. Note that the changes currently apply to libraries opened in SharePoint—the Files tab in Teams and the OneDrive app are not affected at this time. Customizations such as SPFx, column formatting, and view formatting will continue to work.
A cleaner experience in the library
The command bar has been streamlined with a unified button for creating or uploading. Breadcrumb navigation has been improved so you can jump between folders faster and create content at the right level. Views are now displayed as clear tabs beneath the breadcrumb, and active filters appear as pills on the right. A visual indicator shows if you’ve made unsaved changes to a view, with quick options to save, save as new, or reset.
AI actions directly in the library (for Copilot Premium)
For users with Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium, new AI actions appear in the command bar. You can summarize documents, ask questions about the content, compare two files, generate FAQs from a document, and create an audio overview—without opening the files. The goal is to provide quick insights and reduce context switching, especially for long reports or version comparisons. According to Microsoft, the feature is available to Copilot Premium subscribers and is rolling out broadly during November.
Forms for collecting documents and metadata
You can now create forms tied to any folder (including the root folder) in document libraries to collect both files and metadata from colleagues or external parties via a sharing link. This supports common scenarios such as bid collection, invoice workflows, or uploading creative assets. The advantages include consistent metadata for each submission, the ability to control file types and quantity per submission, and not needing to grant write access to the library to collect materials. Forms are built with the same experience as in Microsoft Lists and are published from the command bar.
Timeline and scope
According to Microsoft’s roadmap, rollout of forms to Targeted Release began in October (ID 489834), the new library experience starts for Targeted Release in November (ID 500870), and AI Actions (ID 488297) are slated to be generally available to Copilot Premium subscribers by the end of November. If your organization is on Standard Release, it may take time before everything is visible to all users.

Note: Microsoft states that the Files tab in Teams is not affected in this phase. Plan the rollout based on where your users primarily work with documents—on SharePoint sites, the benefits can be realized immediately, while Teams may follow in later waves.
