Microsoft has announced that SharePoint Alerts—the classic way of receiving notifications about changes in SharePoint—will gradually be phased out over the coming year. For those working with SharePoint and Microsoft Teams, this means it is time to review how you receive reminders and notifications going forward.
Timeline for the Change
Starting in July 2025, new SharePoint Alerts will stop working for new customers. In October 2025, a new limitation will be introduced: all alerts will then have a limited validity period of 30 days, but users can extend an alert for an additional 30 days at a time. From January 2026, it will no longer be possible for any users to create new alerts, and in July 2026, the feature will be removed entirely.
What Should You Use Instead?
Microsoft recommends using Power Automate or SharePoint Rules to create modern notifications and automations. These tools offer more options to customize notifications and workflows—for example, you can create tailored notifications sent directly to Microsoft Teams or via email. To support the transition, reference guides and examples are available to help you build similar functionalities with Power Automate.
How Will Your Users Be Affected?
Users who currently have SharePoint Alerts will see clear information banners both in SharePoint and in their email notifications. It will also be possible to extend existing alerts, but only in 30-day increments. To prepare your organization, it is recommended to update training materials and inform your service desk about the changes.
How to Find Out Which Alerts You Currently Have
To get an overview of which SharePoint Alerts are being used in your environment, you can use the Microsoft 365 Assessment Tool. This tool scans your tenant and provides a report in Power BI showing all active alerts, making it easier to plan the transition to new solutions.
